Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán is a notorious Mexican drug lord who rose from poverty in the remote village of La Tuna, Sinaloa, to become the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. Known for his cunning, innovation in drug smuggling, and ruthless leadership, El Chapo was responsible for transporting massive quantities of drugs like cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine into the United States and other countries.
His life is marked by several dramatic prison escapes, including a famous escape through a mile-long tunnel from a maximum-security prison in 2015. Despite his eventual capture and extradition to the United States, where he was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, his cartel remains active and influential.
