The Russian Mafia, also known as the "Bratva," is a vast and decentralized network of organized crime groups that originated in Russia but now operates globally. Its roots trace back to the "vory v zakone," or "thieves in law," a criminal subculture that emerged in the Soviet Union's prison system. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, these criminal groups expanded rapidly, taking advantage of the chaos and economic instability to grow into powerful organizations involved in a wide range of illegal activities.
The Russian Mafia operates through a loose network of criminal groups, each with its own leadership and area of expertise. These groups engage in various criminal enterprises, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, cybercrime, human trafficking, and extortion. They have also infiltrated legitimate businesses and political systems, both in Russia and internationally, allowing them to operate with relative impunity.
Notable figures within the Russian Mafia include Semion Mogilevich, often referred to as the "boss of bosses," and powerful groups like the Solntsevskaya Bratva and the Tambov Gang. The Russian Mafia's global reach, sophisticated operations, and ability to adapt make them a formidable and persistent threat to law enforcement worldwide. Despite efforts to combat their activities, the Bratva remains a significant force in the world of organized crime.
