In Scripture, we see that there is one God (Deut 6:4) who exists as three distinct persons (Matt 28:19–20). Since there is one God, someone may expect to see that his works are very similar or come in the same style. That is not the picture of the church today! The church today is an international, multi-generational, multi-ethnic movement where Christians all around the world gather and praise the one living and true God. There is great diversity within the church today. Sadly, this diversity can bother some Christians who expect everything to be the same. On a smaller scale, churches like the ones in Corinth can struggle with others within the church who have different gifts than their own. How do we understand the diversity of the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit biblically?

In this week’s episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his teaching on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He guides his listeners to 1 Corinthians 12 where he explains Paul’s words to a church struggling to understand the nature of the spiritual gifts. There were these different groups of Christians within this church dividing from one another because they thought that their spiritual gifts were better than the gifts of others. In 1 Corinthians 12:4–6, Paul directly confronts this misunderstanding of spiritual gifts….
