Cody has been living in Croatia long enough to be able to pronounce three-letter words with no vowels (trg, Krk, smrt) the Slavic way. In fact, what matters most to Croatians, he says, are not the cases (padeži), but the right pronunciation. He laughs at “poklopac” and “portapak” and lags with understanding puns and dialects. Since he is Croatian media’s go-to Yank, we talked about the American education system and about how they learn English and other foreign languages. We quoted movies. And told dad jokes.
