In the West, we sometimes think of the monastic life as one "option" among many. It's good for those who are called to it, but doesn't have much to offer the rest of us. In the Eastern Catholic world, however, the monastic life is seen as the ideal to which all Christians aspire. John Paul II called it the "reference point for all the baptized" in Orientale Lumen.
