Assignment: Try the English Patch create

Tokimeki Memorial is a High School life simulator originally released in 1994 in Japan. You're avatar is a High School freshman and in this game you'll go to school, take exams, join clubs, and, if you play your cards right, maybe your crush will confess her love to you under the Tree of Legend after graduation.

The dating element is core feature of this game. While there has been dating simulators before Tokimeki Memorial, Tokimeki Memorial separates itself by, well, not being pornographic. If you ever wanted to play a video game written by John Hughes, Tokimeki Memorial might be the closest thing you'll find.

It also separates itself from it's lewd counterparts by having one of the most sophisticated systems to develop relationships with NPCs found in any game, including modern releases. You could get a group of friends together to talk about their experience with Tokimeki Memorial and each person would have a wildly different experience than each other person.

This is is exactly what happened in our discussion.

Tokimeki Memorial was a full-budget, mass-marketed, AAA release by gaming giant Konami (The publisher that brought us games like Contra, Castlevania, and Metal Gear Solid), and was so successful it became one of Konami's most beloved properties in Japan, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs, cartoons, comic books, audio dramas, and even a movie.

However, despite it being wildly popular in Japan, it (nor any of its sequels) never had an official release outside of Japan. It wouldn't be until March of 2022 that the game would get its first English fan-translation.

If you, too, would like to play Tokimeki Memorial, you'll need the following

  1. A Super Nintendo Emulator
  2. A copy of the Tokimeki Memorial Rom (I believe it is, at the very least, frowned upon to link to specific roms).
  3. The fan-made English Translation Patch
  4. Follow these instructions on sneslab.net

We also highly encourage you to watch the Action Button Review of Tokimeki Memorial which is where we first learned about this game.
