Welcome to The BRC & Friends Podcast where you will get to know activists, artists, academics, and adventurers who are committed to making the world a better place.

In Episode 51, Bruce, along with co-hosts Laura Mariko Cheifetz (she/her) and Micky Scottbey Jones (she/her) speaks with guest David Magdael (he/him). David is a media strategist for documentary films and indies, and talks about his trip to the SXSW festival in Austin, and how the films that he’s worked on recently have been directed by Asian Pacific filmmakers. He discusses BAD AXE, the documentary that won the Audience favourite award at SXSW, and how it chronicles the experience of a Cambodian-American family in rural Michigan.

As for the Oscars, we also heard about ASCENSION, WHEN WE WERE BULLIES and

QUEEN OF BASKETBALL.

David also talks about how, for him, life started at 32 and marvels at how the ‘Filipino boy from South Stockton, 95209’ built a business that allows him to be in the presence of filmmakers while their lives change. He also shares advice for Micky’s daughter, currently in film school, about pursuing her calling and talks about his version of ‘80-20’ rule.

Thanks for listening!
