Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 65 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 11 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In rugby union: Our world famous tips for the Super Rugby Pacific semifinals: the Brumbies to bamboozle the Blues at Eden Park at 7.05pm on Friday night, and the Chiefs to curry potato the Hurricanes on Saturday at 4.35pm in Wellington.
In rugby league: Due to injury, Latrell Mitchell didn’t feature in the 2022 and 2023 ORIGIN series for New South Wales.
He was also overlooked for State of ORIGIN I this year, due to indifferent form.
Barring something drastic happening, Mitchell is now the short-priced favourite to be recalled by Madge, after an outstanding performance for South Sydney against the Gold Coast Titans over the weekend.
In Football: While Crystal Palace boasts more reps in the England squad than any other Club, Man City ties Inter Milan for the most players from a single Club at EURO 2024.
Pep Guardiola’s star-studded team contributes a trio of players to Portugal's EURO 2024 squad, three to England, a couple to Germany, Belgium and Croatia, plus Rodri to Spain, demonstrating their sheer strength in depth.
Meanwhile, the Viking Erling Haaland is twiddling his thumbs at home!
In Super Netball: Kiera Austin’s super shot masterclass guided the Melbourne Vixens to the top of the Super Netball ladder with a clinical 19-goal win against the Melbourne Mavericks at a sold-out John Cain Arena over the weekend.
The Vixens outscored their cross-town rivals 28-40 in the second-half to record an emphatic 77-58 win.
Meanwhile Giants Netball have vacated the basement of the Super Netball ladder, after a thrilling four-point win against the Queensland Firebirds - their first win over the Firebirds since Round 13, 2022.
In Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz celebrated a historic achievement at Roland Garros in Paris on Sunday.
The 21-year-old became the youngest man to win a major on three different surfaces after edging Alexander Zverev 6-3 2-6 5-7 6-1 6-2 in 4hr 15min in a compelling French Open final.
Alcaraz adds the clay court crown to his triumph at the US Open in 2022 and his victory at Wimbledon last year
In SportsBiz: World Athletics has announced The World Athletics Ultimate Championship to begin in 2026, offering a record US$10Million in prize money, with gold medalists set to receive US$150,000.
What’s the bet it will be held in Saudi Arabia?
And in the NBA Finals: The Boston Celtics tightened their grip on the 2024 NBA Finals, routing the Dallas Mavericks 98-105 in Game 2 at TD Garden in Boston yesterday.
With the win, the Celtics have a 2-0 lead as the series makes its way to Dallas.
Jrue Holiday continued his stellar postseason play, leading the Celtics with 26 points and eleven rebounds.
Celtics forward Jayson Tatum finished the game with 18 points, nine rebounds and a game-high 12 assists.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Everybody that stepped on that court tonight made winning plays. That is the most important thing. It takes everybody to do it.”
The Celtics held the Mavericks to under 100 points for the second consecutive game, forcing 15 turnovers, ultimately limiting Dallas’ effectiveness on offense.
Despite the Mavericks struggling to find their rhythm offensively, Luka Doncic led the team with a game-high 32 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Kyrie Irving finished the contest with 16 points and six assists.
And that’s a wrap!
