Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 67 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 13 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In double rugby BREAKING NEWS: Two-time Dally M winner, Fiji Bati and NRL star Jarryd Hayne walked out of the Mary Wade Correctional Centre in Sydney’s west just before 5pm yesterday, after more than a year in prison, for his rape convictions, which were overturned on appeal.
And Wallabies flyhalf Carter Gordon has switched to rugby league, signing a two-year-deal with the Gold Coast Titans from next season.
The 23-year-old Queenslander represented Australia in last year’s Rugby World Cup, and played Super Rugby Pacific for the now defunct, Melbourne Rebels.
In SportsBiz: Dan Hurley decided Monday to remain at UConn and not take the Los Angeles Lakers offer to become their next Head Coach, despite a six-year US$70Million contract offer, according to ESPN.
Had he accepted, Hurley would have been their seventh Head Coach since Phil Jackson retired after the 2010-11 season.
And in the NBA Finals: The first ever NBA Finals MVP and basketball Hall of Famer, Jerry West died yesterday morning at age 86 with his wife by his side, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Clippers, where West had been working as a consultant.
In Boxing: The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia is in discussions with multiple boxing stakeholders to create a league, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the sport.
A handful of leading promoters, including Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions, are involved in the discussions that could result in a deal valuing the new entity at around US$5Billion, with PIF taking a minority stake, one source said.
Turki al-Sheikh, a close advisor to Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman on sports and is Chairman of the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, is handling discussions.
In the Olympic Games: Fijian Drua stars Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada are being pursued by the Fiji Mens 7s team Coach, Osea Kolinisau to jump on board for the Paris Olympic rugby 7s tournament.
In football: Usain Bolt was stretchered off the field at Stamford Bridge after he ruptured his Achilles during a charity football match.
The Jamaican sprint sensation, captained a World XI team against an England XI for Soccer Aid, which raised US$37.2Million.
So despite his injury it was all worth it – thanks man!
And that’s a wrap!
