Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 71 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 17 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In Rugby Union: And then there were two – emerging from their respective Super Rugby Pacific semifinals – where the Blues whacked the Brumbies 20-34 and the Chiefs caught the Hurricanes napping for an upset 30-19 win.
So who is going to stamp their mark on the finals and in Razor’s new-look All Blacks squad 2024 – Hoskins Sotutu or rising star, Wallace Sititi, the Chiefs outstanding No. 8?
Will it be incumbent All Blacks utility and Chiefs star, Damian McKenzie or the Blues Harry Plummer?
In rugby league: NSW Blues Head Coach Michael Maguire has shaken up his squad for ORIGIN II, dropping Cameron McInnes and Nicho Hynes for Rabbitohs skipper Cameron Murray at lock and Isaah Yeo on the bench.
Mitchell Moses has been named in the No.7 jersey, while Latrell Mitchell is, as widely speculated, in at Centre, with Mitch Barnett replacing Matt Burton as 18th man.
In Super Netball: Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard netted a record 73 goals for West Coast Fever, in front of their largest ever crowd of 11,267 to lift her side to a gritty 78-71 win over the struggling NSW Swifts yesterday.
The Fever’s win ensures they reclaim second spot on the Super Netball ladder.
The Melbourne Mavericks kept their finals hopes alive as they piled on the pain for the Queensland Firebirds with a 73-61 victory at John Cain Arena.
While the Melbourne Vixens hung on for a thrilling 63-61 win over the Sunshine Coast Lightning.
Meanwhile, the Giants’ 2024 finals hopes are hanging by a thread after suffering a 42-57 loss to the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Sydney on Saturday night.
In Football: EURO 2024 results: Italy 2-1 Albania in Dortmund, Poland 0-2 Netherlands in Hamburg, Denmark 1-1 Slovenia in Stuttgart and we tip Serbia to shampoo England in Gelsenkirchen.
In SportsBiz: The best guess by MLB executives, agents and insiders polled by ESPN, of the free-agent contract for Yankees star Juan Soto, due to hit the open market after the 2024 season is US$482.5Million!
Unlike Dodgers star, Shohei Ohtani’s record US$700M contract, most of it to be paid out after the contract ends, Soto’s deal is fully paid out during the term of the contract.
And in Boxing: Back in the ring for the first time since April 2023, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis returned in style with an eighth-round knockout of the previously undefeated Frank Martin in Las Vegas yesterday, defending his WBA World Lightweight title.
Martin, who boasted a 18-0 record with 12 knockouts before this fight, was no match for the now 30-0 Davis.
And that’s a wrap peeps!
