Episode 138: Unpacking the Recent Tech Layoffs: What Companies and Candidates Can Learn From Them

It seems every day there’s a new company in the news announcing mass layoffs, especially in the tech industry. In this episode, Karen Weeks, the chief people officer at Ordergroove and host of the Shine at Work Podcast, is sharing more than 20 years of HR experience in the tech industry to help us unpack what we can learn from these layoffs and how companies and candidates can approach them with resilience.

Some of the key takeaways include:

  • The tech industry is famous for having huge upswings in sales or demand that eventually comes back down, and they also have opportunities to automate roles that are currently delivered manually. These are two major reasons we’re seeing layoffs hit this industry so hard.
  • If you need to conduct layoffs, take the time to do it right. Have the paperwork ready for your former employees to complete, provide resources on applying for unemployment or networking opportunities, whatever you can do to soften the blow.
  • If you find yourself recently laid off, don’t be afraid to share that information on LinkedIn and in job interviews. Tell everyone in your network the type of role you’re looking for and let them help you land that next role.
