Topic of the Week (11/3/23):

It's the Captain's Log edition - it's an FMC roundup plus a few extra stories

The Maritime Professorᵀᴹ presents By Land and By Sea - an attorney breaking down the week in supply chain

with Lauren Beagen (Founder of The Maritime Professorᵀᴹ and Squall Strategies)

Let's dive in...
It's the Captain's Log Edition - FMC round up, plus a few extras

1 - The Federal Maritime Commission is still working through their three rulemakings 1) Defining Unreasonable Refusal to Deal or Negotiate w/r/t/ Vessel Space Accommodations Provided by an Ocean Common Carrier, 2) Billing Practices of Detention and Demurrage, and 3) Defining Unfair or Unjustly Discriminatory Methods
Why is it taking so long and what's changed recently?

2 - FMC Commissioner Rebecca Dye's call for Supply Chain Innovation Teams. They will be looking at: empty container return, early return date, and container pickup (notice of container availability).

5 - A recycled story from May - 70+ shippers ask Congress for clarity on through bills of lading and the FMC's statutory authority - no movement, but it's on my Captain's Log of things I'm watching/waiting for...

6 - Panama Canal is reducing vessel transits to 18 per day by Feb 1, 2024. (down from 36 vessel transits on a good day) - it's still not major cause for concern... yet.
