Dedicated Senior Medical Center is a business under ChenMed founded by James Chen and currently managed by the CEO Chris Chen. ChenMed is a family-owned and run company that started in Miami 30 years ago. The Chen family used to be impoverished. To give to the community, they are helping the underserved and underprivileged communities through accessible and complete medical facilities.
In this episode of Cafecito with Rosie, Dr. Nehal Gheewala, the National Director of Growth at ChenMed, shares the goal and mission of the institution. The DSMC is created to help senior patients with their medical needs. They ensure that every patient is treated as a family and a VIP. Dr. Gheewala asserts that to ensure they take care of patients properly, they offer complete and convenient services from medical assessments to transportation.
Dr. Gheewala said that the likelihood of people more than 65 years old being hospitalized increases. They have to be proactive in ensuring the health of every patient. On average, every patient calls their DSMC doctors and spends 240-260 minutes, if not more, every year. This interaction helps doctors to know every patient, their history, and their status. Doctors and staffs of DSMC do a weekly routined call to patients to know them better, just like we do for our families. It is possible as, unlike most hospitals around the Tampa area, they only have 400 patients per doctor.
The DSMC and its amenities have locations all over Tampa, as Dr. Gheewala mentioned. These locations are chosen based on the status of the community. Usually, it is where there are only a few stores, few means of transportation, or areas with a lack of doctors. This is to live their mission of helping impoverished citizens. Rosie was very impressed that the Dedicated Senior Medical Center partnered with local food banks to distribute food items to patients with no access to healthier options.
