WHAT CATCHES THE EYE AND HEART OF GOD Mercy and Compassion Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart. Matthew 11:29 1. A PREVAILING CHARACTERISTIC OF GOD IS HIS MERCY AND COMPASSION “I Am the God of compassion and mercy” Exodus 34:6 “The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.” Psalm 103:8 “He had compassion” Matthew 9:33 “He had compassion” Matthew 14:14 “Jesus was moved with compassion” Mark 1:41 2. BECAUSE OF GOD’S COMPASSION AND MERCY, HE LOOKS FOR IT IN HIS KIDS “You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.” Luke 6:36 “If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need, but shows no compassion--how can God’s love be in that person?” 1 John 3:17 3. HE SHOWS MERCY ONLY TO THOSE WHO SHOW MERCY “There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy.” James 2:13 “God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Matthew 5:7 4. BECAUSE GOD HAS GIVEN US MERCY AND COMPASSION, WE MUST SHARE MERCY AND COMPASSION WITH OTHERS “But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:16 “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3:5 “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter). The next day Jesus purposed to go into Galilee, and He found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” John 1:40-46 “And Matthew gave a big reception for Jesus in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:27-32 “There is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away!” Luke 15:7 THE STORY OF THE HUNGRY LEPERS WHO FOUND FOOD 2 Kings 7 I WILL SHOW THE MERCY AND COMPASSION OF CHRIST TO: ________________________________________
