Richard Egües pasaba la veintena cuando comenzó sus estudios de flauta. Su primera experiencia profesional con este instrumento tuvo lugar en la orquesta municipal de Santa Clara. El año 1952 marca un antes y un después para su carrera y para la orquesta Aragón. Con el flautista Richard Egües y el violinista Rafael Lay en la dirección, la Aragón adquirió un sonido propio y un estilo singular, aportando un selecto repertorio. La Aragón se convirtió en poco tiempo en una de las principales orquestas típicas de la historia musical de Cuba, donde aparecerá siempre con el sobrenombre de la Charanga Eterna.
