“Saint Francis of Assisi and a True Love of Creation," written by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess and read by Tom Carani.

In her blog post, Fatima discusses that St. Francis is commonly looked on as a person who simply loved animals. However, as described by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’: on care for our common home, St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order and his feast day is October 4th, is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. We are called by Pope Francis, with St. Francis as our model, to care for and respect our common home and care for our neighbors who are exploited by consumerism and the throw away culture. Laudato Si’ offers the examples of food waste while many go hungry, fishing communities harmed by the pollution of water and depletion of fishing reserves, the change in sea levels forcing impoverished coastal populations to migrate, as well as “the premature death of many of the poor, in conflicts sparked by the shortage of resources” (Laudato Si’, 48).
