Missing white woman syndrome
Manage episode 304028183 series 2767221
At the moment, Gabby Petito's fiancé Brian Laundrie is still missing, but what has made the social media rounds is the term "missing white woman syndrome" where the majority of the media does mass coverage if a pretty, white, well-to-do woman goes missing.
Is there such a thing? Is it like a feeding frenzy, where one news outlet talks about it, so then other news outlets feel compelled to cover it, and pretty soon, everyone is on board because the worst thing that can happen in the eyes of your news director is that you’re not covering “The Big Story.”
We’re taking a deep dive with this week’s guest, Dr. Kim Anderson, professor at the University of Central Florida’s School of Social Work.
