The darkwave/post-punk band Idol Talk (Josh Gaines, Eric Mann, and Tom Sowders) recently stopped by Live & Local, following the release of their debut album “Allure.” Follow Idol Talk on Instagram. Like many great bands, Idol Talk came together out of the demise of a previous outfit: a band called Toothsome that Mann and Sowders both played in. “We had always wanted to play more electronic-based, darker music,” says Mann, “and Tom knew Josh and brought him in the mix – and then last spring we just went forward with it.” “I was like, ‘Eric, I know just the guy to bring the whole thing together,’” Sowders adds with a laugh. “I was like, ‘just be warned: he goes deep and he goes hard.’” Once the trio came together, they didn’t waste time: they’ve only been a band for about a year and a half, but they’ve already written, recorded, and released a full album – and played a dozen live shows for good measure. “It was a process,” Sowders says of the new album, which was recorded and released by the Raleigh-based label Boared to Death . “It’s been one of the most gratifying recording experiences of my life.” Visit Idol Talk’s page on BoaredToDeathRecords.com. Gaines says that process has been highly collaborative from start to finish. “Eric will usually come with an idea, we’ll send things back and forth, then Tom will come in with vocals and we’ll pull it all together. We’ve kind of been racing towards this record for the better part of the past year.” That record, “Allure,” is a tight and powerful collection of eight songs, led by twin lead singles “Accelerator” (our favorite) and “Dark Objects,” with a post-punk ‘80s vibe and a sound that one online reviewer described, accurately, as “smeared in mascara and malaise.” Listen to the album and purchase it on Bandcamp. “The 80’s vibe is what we’re going for,” Sowders says. “We’re very inspired by vibe…I’ve been in other songwriting situations where I really was concerned about clever lyrics, working more with the mind, and with this it’s more of a feel, which feels awesome… To just let (the music) come from that deeper place (is) so much fun. And I think that’s why people are responding to us, in ways that are really flattering.” If you want to catch Idol Talk live, you’ve got a chance this week: Thursday, May 22, is World Goth Day, and they’re celebrating the occasion with a show at Rubies on Five Points in Durham. Click here for more information about Thursday’s show. Idol Talk stopped by Live & Local to chat about the album and play three tracks: “Accelerator,” “Copenhagen,” and “Dark Objects.” Listen: The post Feeling the ‘Allure’: Live & Local with Idol Talk appeared first on Chapelboro.com .…
