From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Gwinnett County Public Schools. Today is Friday, February 9th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cherokee County Firefighters Honored for Outstanding Service

In a recent ceremony hosted by the Cherokee County Fire Chief’s Foundation, eight members of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services were commended for their exemplary service. The annual "of the Year" awards, presented by Fire Chief Eddie Robinson, recognized Stan Ice, Sgt. Rick Scales, Sgt. RC Vaughn, FAO Jonathan Laurich, FAO Beau Witcher, FAO Alissa Whetstone, Capt. Nathan Baum, and Battalion Chief Shannon Gibbs for their dedication and commitment.

In a poignant moment during the event, the foundation also presented a check exceeding $32,000 to Sgt. Chris King, who is currently fighting cancer. This donation was raised from a dedicated fundraiser, highlighting the community's support for their local heroes.

This act takes on particular significance considering the elevated risk firefighters face in relation to cancer. As per the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, firefighters have a 9% higher chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of succumbing to it compared to the general U.S population. This event not only celebrated the bravery and service of these individuals but also underscored the ongoing challenges they face in their line of duty.

Also, remember to say 'yes' to GCPS and mark your calendar for the Teacher Job Fair happening tomorrow! Be there on February 10th at 8am at the Gas South Convention Center. Don't miss this golden opportunity to be a part of Georgia's largest school district and a top employer recognized by Forbes. Say 'yes' to GCPS, where passion meets opportunity!
