Chrisitan Ethics

Pt. 3 “True Tolerance”

Romans 15:1-2

Patience (v.1)

Pleasing (v.2)

1 Cor. 10:24 Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 14:3 the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.

Phil. 2:3-4 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Same idea.

1 Jo. 4:11,20-21 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. .. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

1 Cor. 9:22; 10:33 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some… 10:33 just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

1 Cor.10:27-32 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,

1 Thess. 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

Truthful Triage:

  • Be biblical - is it essential to salvation or sanctification? (1 Tim. 6:1-5,20-21; 2 Tim. 1:13-14; 2:14-15)
  • Be edifying- (Pro. 12:25; 15:4, 16:24; 2 Cor. 10:8; 12:19)
  • Be discerning - is it Grey or Black and White (an ethical issue or lifestyle choice?/Ro. 14-15; 1 Cor. 6, 8,10)
  • Beware of foolish and silly controversies (1 Tim. 4:7; 6:20; Ti. 1:14; 4:7)
  • Beware of hand-grenades or time-wasters (2 Tim. 2:23; Ti. 3:9-11)
  • Be careful to speak tactfully (Pro. 15:1,23; 2 Tim. 2:24-26)

Tactful Tips:

  • Be a good listener (Pro. 15:31-32; 19:20,27; Ja. 1:19)
  • Be carefully quiet (Pro. 10:19; 11:2; 17:27; 18:2)
  • Be a truth-teller (Pro. 12:22; 16:13; 19:5,9; Eph. 4:15-16)
