Mike and Bennett are fielding a question from the audience on this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories. What makes a great lieutenant? - an excellent question to ask a couple of NCOs who have seen their fare share of platoon commanders ranging from great to ….not so great. Let's face it, there are some people you would follow to hell and back...and others you wouldn't follow into a 7/11.
First off, it’s important to note that Marine officers are selected in various ways. There is OCS: Officer Candidates School. College graduates attend OCS for a chance at commission. Then attend TBS: The Basic School. The Naval Academy has it’s own admissions process. Graduates are commissioned at commencement. Academy grads go straight to TBS. The Basic Schools trains young officers in the various disciplines and capabilities of the Marine Corps and naval service. Officers are assigned their MOS at TBS and sent to follow on schools to earn their final MOS designator. It ain’t easy! - Preparing for training can be nerve racking. Thoughts of potential negative outcomes can manifest into an intimidating mental image. Stay focused and work with your peers to build a cohesive unit able to tackle any obstacle. Build your professional strengths. Address your weaknesses on your off time. When you get to the fleet, listen to your NCOs. Learn about the greater Marine Corps through their experiences. Delegate authority and take ultimate responsibility. Empower your Marines as small unit leaders…. And for god sake stay on the radio!
