On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories Mike and Bennett are talking about life in the grunts and the intelligent people you meet. The majority of the military does their actual job everyday. The support elements that keep the whole machine going are always at work. Infantrymen and other combat related MOS train until being employed in a fight. Their training needs to be realistic to battlefield conditions, without actually killing anybody. Battlefield commanders have a vision for how they would like to conduct continuous operations. It is up to the infantry and their combat collaborators to make that vision a reality. It’s not simply carrying out orders that are handed down from on high. The situation is dynamic. Leaders have to make decisions that directly affect the lives of the personnel in their charge. Their scope of responsibility is limited but the consequences of their actions are severe.

In order to be successful many moving parts need to work in harmony. Different occupational specialities need to understand how to use each other's assets and how to request support based on a situation. It’s up to the grunt in the field to know and understand how the assets available to him can work to support his mission and employ them effectively to achieve success. The era of the dumb grunt is over.
