Collectively is a podcast series focusing on personal responses to Towner Eastbourne's Collection of 5,000 works of art. This debut season approaches the nearly 100-year-old Collection through a queer lens, in collaboration with artist Renee Vaughan Sutherland and members of the LGBTQIA+ community living in East Sussex.
In this first episode, Renee explores the Towner Collection, talks to curators Karen Taylor and Sara Cooper about how the Collection came to be, and deep dives into three paintings that really captured her attention during the Collectively sessions.
Works discussed in this episode:
Phelan Gibb, Three Graces, 1911
Edward Burra, Soldier's Backs, 1942
Patricia Preece, Girl in a Yellow Dress
Frances Hodgkins, Portrait of Cedric Morris, 1930
John Minton, Spanish Village, 1950
Margaret Benecke, Interior with Figure
