Patrick Mason is in his fourth season as head baseball coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies struggled last year by posting a 19-36 record and missing out on the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament but swept their opening series of the current campaign at USC Upstate before winning their home opener against Marshall. As discussed in the College Baseball Now podcast, Virginia Tech first baseman Sam Fragale had one of the best first games of a season in history. Against the Spartans on Friday, February 17, Fragale hit home runs in each of his first three at-bats before adding a double and triple later in the contest. The following day he contributed a two-run single in his first trip to the plate to go 6-for-6 to begin the season. Mason was a three-year starting catcher at Northeastern and helped lead the Huskies to the America East title in 1994 and 1997. He coached at his alma mater before joining the Hokies under previous head coach Pete Hughes. Mason served as an assistant coach who worked with the Hokies’ pitchers as well as recruiting coordinator, which made him the ideal candidate to replace Hughes when the latter took over the Oklahoma program in 2013. In the podcast, Mason discusses the ups and downs the Virginia Tech baseball program has encountered over the last three years but adds that he feels the momentum has changed over the course of the offseason. More momentum will come in 2018 when the Hokies open their new ballpark in Blacksburg. Among the other topics Mason discusses in the podcast are the need for changes in the recruiting calendar, the traits he looks for in a top-flight catcher, and what he and staff consider to be key ingredients when on the recruiting trail. He also explains how rewarding it is to see former members of the program achieve their dreams by reaching the major leagues, which is what happened in 2016 for former Hokies Chad Pinder and Joe Mantiply.
