Un dia, en tornar de passejar amb el gos, l’enginyer suís George de Mestral comprovà que portava enganxades desenes d’espiguetes en la roba. Preguntar-se com havia passat va inspirar-li una de les idees més pràctiques de la història. Primer ho va intentar gastant cotó i fou un fracàs. Per contra, amb nylon i poliéster la cosa funcionà molt millor. Un 13 de maig patentaven el velcro.
