The Mental Health Foundation defines relationships as ‘the way in which two or more people are connected, or the state of being connected’. Relationships include the intimate relationships we have with our partners, those we form with our parents, siblings and grandparents, and those we form socially with our friends, work colleagues, teachers, healthcare professionals and community.

Relationships are one of the most important aspects of our lives, yet we can often forget just how crucial our connections with other people are for our physical and mental health. People who are more socially connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier, and live longer - with fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected. It’s not just the number of friends you have, and it’s not whether or not you’re in a committed relationship, but it’s the quality of your close relationships that matters. As a society and as individuals, we have to prioritize building and maintaining good relationships and tackling the barriers to forming them. Extensive evidence shows Having close, positive relationships can give us a purpose and sense of belonging.
