Tam Schluter is a former work colleague of Sam's when he first started his career in the early 90s. She is opinionated, spirited and funny. She is former guest columnist for the Hastings Tribune.
Tam and Sam visit about her recent 39 day nine state trip with her husband (also named Sam) through the western states in their motor home.
They discuss 5 thoughts that she learned from the trip:
1) People have the ability to make small things big, then stomp them into the ground regardless of fallout. Give me a mountain trail riddled with bears any day, over the crowd of volatile unpredictable humans. Bears don't bitch. They just do what they do.
2) The journey is the ultimate destination. So many times we can't wait to get somewhere, and in the rush we overlook the crazy-cool landscapes unfolding on the way there.
3) It doesn't matter what you drive. It doesn't matter if you're the oldest rig in the campground. It doesn't matter if you have the fanciest gear or the most technical tent. What matters is the "doing" of it all. Just get it done, whatever it takes to make things happen. Don't wait for stuff to come along, for that crap is temporary. Just go, and figure it along the way.
4) Laugh. Hard. Even in the face of pain and adversity. Find a way to laugh, for it is healing to troubled souls.
5) Notice regional difference - in the land and how people live. It will become perfectly clear that everybody is working hard just to get by - regardless of whether they live in a multi-million dollar house, or a ramshackle shack. Everybody struggles with something. Some of it just invisible.
