Up to 50% of antibiotics are prescribed inappropriately, and this overuse is rapidly accelerating resistance, leading to increased mortality and morbidity in patients.
Antimicrobial stewardship is a coordinated intervention to reduce the use of unnecessary antibiotics and improve patient outcomes. At the center of patient care, nurses have tremendous influence in the success of such programs.
