Liz Arruda is a combat medic, veteran and an immigrant. She served from 2004 to 2014 and was medically retried due to succumbing to chronic pain from disease that many people suffer with in Fibromyalgia. Which may been manifested by the stress brought on from witnessing multiple traumas while on deployment plus all the other stressors which affect most people in their daily lives. She shares her struggles in basic with the language barrier, which only was compounded on deployment to Baghdad, Iraq where she was assigned to the #1 trauma Combat Service Hospital (CSH) supporting one of “the bloodiest” period of the war.
During that deployment she found her purpose in helping others but struggled shifting back to life in Garrison where the ops tempo was much slower & the direct impact on mission was not the same. She like many people suffering from multiple traumas dove into reckless habits to chase the feeling only the high ops tempo which deployments bring. Through the fog she recognized she needed help and began the long process to heal. This drove her curiosity of finding the root cause for her healing, she along with the help of her physician came up with a plan to reduce her pharmaceutical intake. She was introduced to "battle field" acupuncture as well other alternative treatments to help herself and others heal. Currently she is in the last year of acquiring her Masters in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and continues the self-work of healing.
Notes to Listener:
The show is unscripted and is approached with the idea of discussing many different topics through out the course of a conversation. Each week will bring its own nuanced conversation which will hopefully bring you a different perspective to consider which may help you in your own or someone you may know struggle.
