Nathan Robinson was 27 years old when this occurred. He has a degree in mathematics and lived with his father William Spiller, 48, in a flat in Bournemouth, a coastal area in the south of England. William was a taxi driver. He was better known as Big Bill, because he was a big man, approximately 1.9 meters tall, weighing around 150 kilos, and he had a girlfriend called Glenys Molyneaux. Nathan's mother lived in another town.
Nathan didn't have a steady job; he was living with his father without contributing to the household expenses. His father had lent him money and Nathan swore he would pay it back, but this didn’t happen. Big Bill wanted his son to have his own house and be independent. Due to this situation, their relationship was troubled. The two would fight from time to time, at times even the neighbours heard them arguing.
On the night of May 16, 2013, William and Nathan had another fight. Noise could be heard coming from the flat. The voices were muffled but a neighbour downstairs could hear William saying something like, “do you think I’m going to support you all my life?” and then a few minutes later he shouted ''call an ambulance''. All went quiet and this neighbour decided to go upstairs to see if everything was ok and Nathan opened the door. He said everything was fine, they had made up, he said his father was out visiting his girlfriend.
