In Luke 4:1-13, the story of Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness is where we we find the “son of God" immediately after his baptism in the Jordan River. For 40 days and night, Jesus ate nothing and was tested by the devil. We often read this story as one of Jesus’ identification with us as fully human. He is hungry, he is physically weak and he is tempted just as we are. Is there more to this than what Luke is trying to say?
Why does 40 and wilderness sound familiar? Where else have we seen this? The Exodus.
This story according to Luke is about Israel’s past. Luke's deliberate use of the reference “son of God” is an allusion to the Israelites who are the sons of God. Going back further, Adam is also known as the son of God. Unlike both who sinned, Jesus’ triumph over temptation is a redemption and declaration he is the new Israel and the new Adam.
This all should help us answer the question Luke is begging us to ask: Is Jesus worthy to be our Savior?
We meet weekly at the City Centre Community Centre in Richmond, British Columbia. We gather for worship on the 3F! Everyone is welcome to come!
