Clayton Oates joins Steve Major on the Podcast today.
Clayton Oates is recognised as a Thought Leader in the Accounting | Bookkeeping and Technology Industries in Australia and Internationally. He has been working in (and consulting to) the Accounting | Bookkeeping and Software Consulting industries in Australia for more than 25 years. After completing a Business (Accounting) degree at Monash University Melbourne he joined Price Waterhouse, working in the tax division for 5 years, then moving into industry as a retail Accountant followed by 9 years with Accounting firm WHK Rutherfords (now Crowe Horwath), based in Northern NSW.
In 1998 he co-founded QA Business (a specialist independent IT Consultancy practice) focussed on improving business systems, productivity and performance for Small Business Owners & Operators, Software Consultants, Bookkeepers and Accountants. Since its inception, QA Business has set up and managed thousands of business software systems throughout Australia, from sole-trader start-up businesses through to large corporations.
Clayton was recently included in the Top 25 Thought Leaders In the Accounting Profession by USA based CPA Practice Advisor, the first inclusion by an Aussie on this list.

Technology is a huge opportunity.
The challenge is that the pace of change and amount of change leads to inertia.The current business model is an element of the challenge.
The opportunities lie in our ability to connect. The ability to be in the clients footsteps.
Consider the Johari window.
Ask questions to understand.
Transition from trusted advisor to being a difference maker.
“Not looking for someone who has all the answers but rather the person who has the right questions” – Billy Connelly
Accountants and bookkeepers have the presence with the client. Go and understand the business. Ask questions.
If you want to be interesting then be interested.
Accountants know a reasonable amount about a lot of things – this is an important skill. The role of the accountant / bookkeeper is to be a connector.
The reason we are doing difference making work is :-
  • foundation has been technical
  • some if has been knowledge
  • billable hour.

The billable hour just end up removing freedom.

Change from services to products.

The ability to leverage is greater than ever before.

Decide are you going to specialise.

The core technology solutions include :-

  • Accounting engine
  • CRM
  • Ecommerce
  • dashboard / kpi
  • document management

Technology is a part of the toolkit. Talking about accounting is done. Need to talk about business processes.

Don’t be pressured that you to refine tool kit.

Be the circle of trust around small business.
