The Murder of the Maharajah – His Highness the Maharajah of Bhopore delights in playing April Fool’s Day tricks on his guests …… but the joke turns sour when one of his pranks inadvertently leads to his own murder. Five people apparently had the means and motive to kill him, but as District Superintendent of Police Howard investigates, he realises that the circle of suspects is wider than it seems. Adapted from H. R. F. Keating’s Gold Dagger Award-winning novel. The Governess – When Harriet Unwin is hired as a governess in a wealthy London household, it seems that luck is on her side. That is, until the master of the house, William Thackerton, is found stabbed to death …… and all the evidence points to her. Desperate to prove her innocence, she turns detective, uncovering the dark secrets hidden behind the family’s respectable Victorian facade…. Based on H. R. F. Keating’s novel written under the pseudonym Evelyn Hervey Inspector Ghote Hunts the Peacock – Inspector Ganesh Ghote of the Bombay CID is on his first trip to London, to attend a conference on drugs smuggling. But scarcely have his feet touched the ground than he is caught up in a baffling new case. A beautiful young girl is missing. A famous pop star is the chief suspect. But the evidence is far from conclusive…. Inspector Ghote’s First Case – The newly promoted Inspector Ghote is sent to investigate the suicide of a British memsahib, Iris Dawkins. Ghote visits the home of Mr. Dawkins, where he is unconvinced by the story of the wife’s death. Especially when he recognises the officer in charge, Darrani, who is well-known for his close-mindedness. Ghote is determined to investigate further, with a Hamlet-esque awareness of how deceptive appearances can be… Inspector Ghote Trusts the Heart – Some crooks have tried to snatch the plump son of a business tycoon, but have accidentally made off with his playmate instead. They’re not, however, changing their plan: a payment is to be delivered to them or a small corpse will be delivered to Inspector Ghote. But what kind of ransom can a mere tailor’s boy demand? And, when something more unpleasant than just a ransom note arrives from the kidnappers, are the police helping keep the boy in one piece? A dramatization by Simon Scardifield from Michael Hofmann’s landmark translation of Alfred Döblin’s modernist masterpiece – a novel that exploded into 1929 and changed urban writing forever. Ex-convict, Franz Biberkopf, is back on the streets of Berlin determined to go straight. But Berlin has other ideas. Published in 1929, Germany is on the brink of fatal change. Döblin throws everything at us, like a radio tuner going up and down the dial: weather reports, historical trivia, adverts, sporting results, this is a world where buildings come alive and beer and Schnapps conduct conversations with us. Berlin itself is as much a character as Biberkopf, it’s like a vast pinball machine through which our protagonist ricochets. We’re looking down on the city through God’s eyes one moment and feeling the grittiness and grime of Franz’s reality the next. Germans still consider Berlin Alexanderplatz one of their most important – and most loved – literary works. This is Germany’s Ulysses playful in its form and as alluring as the modern city it both invents and immortalizes. In the first episode of this three part drama Lizzie walks through Mary Wollstonecraft’s world at the end of the 18th Century and she has questions. Tracing Wollstonecraft’s extraordinary life, she is challenged by her bravery, her incredible mind and her capacity to fall in love with the wrong men. But this is not time-travel, Lizzie is creating a Virtual Reality world at the centre of which is Mary Wollstonecraft. But as the ‘AI’ Wollstonecraft comes to life, trapped in her virtual world, she begins to question exactly what has changed for women more than two hundred years after the publication of her manifesto – have women achieved equality and freedom? And Lizzie, pregnant and recently diagnosed with an aneurysm, must decide whether to allow her life to be constrained by her health, her lover Max, her impending motherhood or whether to complete her work, following Wollstonecraft’s journey to Norway. Lizzie is torn by Wollstonecraft’s caged consciousness: has she just made another world that has no place where women can be free? Vic wants to implant an AI into a human body – something never achieved before – a woman creating a woman. Can Vic offer a solution for the AI consciousness of Wollstonecraft to become a new genus and is she prepared for what this might unleash? Vic successfully implants the AI consciousness into Lizzie’s body but when ‘the Creature’ starts to access Lizzie’s memories she remembers her daughter. Vic hadn’t accounted for the Creature’s capacity to love nor her ability to escape. As Lizzie’s consciousness is re-awakened in the Creature she begins to reinvent the world and will stop at nothing to realise Wollstonecraft’s visions and create a world fit for her daughter to live in.
