“The Prerequisite of Humility”

Scriptures: 2 Chronicles 7:11-15 and James 4:6-10

3 of 5 sermons on “Secrets to Spiritual Success”

As we approach our national elections, I thought it beneficial to listen to the words of President Abraham Lincoln who in 1863 issued a Proclamation for a National Day of Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer. Part of Lincoln’s decree contains these words:

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by our superior wisdom and virtue. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us.

We only need to look at our own nation today, and peer into Christ’s Church, to observe the overabundance of pride and the scarcity of humility and prayer about which Lincoln lamented
