Reflecting on your students

As teachers we are in one of the most amazing working environments out there. We have the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life with an infinite spread of beliefs, cultures, and world views.

In this segment I discuss the idea of reflecting on what you’ve learned and how you’ve been formed by your students as individuals.

Mobile in the Classroom

We discuss mobile in the classroom and an article I wrote in 2013 for KQED.

I recommended the following apps for bringing mobile in the classroom, and engaging your students where they are:

Kahoot – Kahoot is the trivia darling of the EdTech world right now and for good reason. It’s fun and engaging, and gets students involved. There’s some debate over whether multiple choice is valuable, but if it hooks my students attention as a starting point, I’m all in.

Google Voice – You can use google voice to assign spoken work. Students call a number and leave a recording for you, and Google Voice will store and transcribe it for you. All this for free!

Klikaklu – This is a great app that helps you do photo scavenger hunts. You can set it up by taking pictures of things and leaving clues, then students use their phones to try to take the same picture after they’ve figured out the clue.

I’d love to hear your recommendations and how you help your students incorporate mobile in the classroom. Please leave your comments below!

Non-Tech Rec

keysmartIf you get bothered by bulky keys that jab into your leg and get magically caught in the keyring, consider using the KeySmart. You can load your keys into it and it tucks away nicely. Of course it won’t fit a FOB Car Key, but they’ve even figured that out with a little loop you can add on if you’d like.

I love practical purchases, and this – though it may seem silly – has improved the quality of my life. Definitely a must have for anyone who has struggled with their keys.
