Fue miembro del Centro Internacional de Epistemología Genética (Ginebra, Jean Piaget), director asociado de la Escuela Práctica de Altos Estudios (Francia) y profesor visitante en la Escuela de Educación de Harvard. Fue Chief Education Officer, One Laptop Per Child OLPC.
Obtuvo las becas Guggenheim, Fulbright y Eisenhower en los EEUU.
Recibió el Premio Nacional de Ciencias (Psicología y Educación).
