Horacio Quiroga (Salto, 1878 – Buenos Aires, 1937) destacado narrador uruguayo, ha sido considerado creador del cuento moderno hispanoamericano. Tuvo como influencias a Poe, Maupassant, Kipling y Chéjov. La fatalidad que lo acompañó toda su vida, parece estar siempre presente en sus cuentos y haber quedado plasmada –quizás exorcizada – junto con los alucinantes elementos de amor, locura, horror, a los que se agrega el asombro ante la fragilidad de la vida del hombre. “El hombre muerto” pertenece al libro El salvaje y otros cuentos.
