Last week we seen that the Lord’s Prayer teaches us how to pray. Now let’s look at obstacles to prayer:

James 4:2

“Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.”

An obstacle to daily prayer is just not ASKING.

James 4:3

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

Asking with wrong MOTIVES is an obstacle to prayer.

Proverbs 28:9

“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.”

An obstacle to prayer is failing to LISTEN to God’s Word.

Psalm 66:18

“ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:”

Unconfessed SIN is an obstacle to prayer. Because communication with God is so important and vital to every part of your Christian life and because all of us deal with sin in our lives every day, we must understand how to deal with sin. As God’s child, how does He view my sins?

Psalm 103:12

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he REMOVED our transgressions from us.”

Hebrews 10:17

“And their sins and iniquities will I REMEMBER no more.”

If all of my sins are forgiven, am I free to sin?

Sin hinders my relationship with Him.

Romans 6:1-2

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”

Shall we continue in sin? GOD FORBID. God says “NO!”

Romans 6:12

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”

Let not sin REIGN in your body.

Let’s read two main passages of Scripture (Galatians 5:19-21 and Colossians 3:5; 8-9) that deal with sins we commit in our world every day.

Definitions of Sins from These Scripture Passages:

Galatians 5:19–21

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Adultery and fornication—sexual sin, idol worship, homosexuality

Uncleanness—sexual lust, impure motives

Lasciviousness—an unstoppable lust, shamelessness

Idolatry—worship of false gods, giving honor to any but the one true God

Witchcraft—using drugs, sorcery, deception, calling upon spirits

Hatred—hostile, opposing God, blaming God, hateful

Variance—strife, contention, debating

Emulation—jealousy, rivalry

Wrath—boiling anger, mad enough to kill, an angry drunk

Strife—putting yourself first, dividing others to put yourself first

Sedition—division, rebelling

Heresy—believing false beliefs or making up your own false beliefs

Murderers—killing

Envying—desiring the possessions of another

Drunkenness—drunk, intoxicated

Reveling—rioting, drunken feasts

Colossians 3:5, 8–9

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:…But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;”

Fornication—sexual sin, idol worship, homosexuality

Uncleanness—sexual lust, impure motives

Inordinate affection—evil, sinful passions

Evil concupiscence—craving forbidden sin

Anger—a violent temper, a desire to punish, vengeance

Idolatry—worship of false gods, giving honor to any but the one true God

Covetousness—greediness, a desire to have more than is needed

Wrath—boiling anger, mad enough to kill, an angry drunk

Malice—a desire to injure, wickedness, not ashamed to break laws, trouble, evil

Blasphemy—evil speaking of God, swearing using God’s name

Filthy communication—foul speaking, obscene speech, false doctrine

Lie—deceiving

Hebrews 12:5-11

“And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

As a child of God, if you continue to sin, God will discipline you as a FATHER disciplines his children. But you will never lose your SALVATION. A son or daughter can never stop being a son or daughter.

Galatians 6:7-9

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

God will allow you to REAP according to what you sow.

James 1:14-16

“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.”

What is the final result of not dealing with sin? DEATH. As a Christian, your salvation is secure. But you can lose your peace, your joy, and your closeness to God. Be in the Word of God every day and be in prayer to God every day.
