Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com CONSTRUCTION ON JEDDAH TOWER REACHES 63RD FLOOR Construction on the future world’s tallest building, the approximately 1-km-tall Jeddah Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has reached the 63rd of what could ultimately be more than 200 floors, ConstructionWeekOnline.com reports. A contract to build the infrastructure was awarded in January, and shelling and cladding work is expected to be complete next year. Citing Reuters, the source said the CEO of developer Jeddah Economic Co. (JEC) has acknowledged delays due to technical challenges and a Saudi Arabian crackdown on corruption that affected several JEC investors. He said he hopes to have Jeddah Tower “open for business” by 2020. CEA EVENTS UPDATED, ANNOUNCED The Chicago Elevator Association (CEA) has announced a location and date change for its March meeting. It will take place at The Clubhouse in Oak Brook, Illinois on March 1 and feature a guest speaker from Helios. Those interested in attending should RSVP. The next meeting will take place on April 5 and host a guest speaker from GAL Manufacturing Corp. CEA will also be holding its scholarship fundraiser on May 17 and Chicago cruise to benefit the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation on June 27. CONTROVERSIAL NEW ITV CENTER GREENLIT IN LONDON Despite opposition, a plan for new headquarters for broadcaster ITV London that consists of a multistory headquarters building of up to 14 stories and a 31-story residential tower has been greenlit by lawmakers in London's Lambeth district, Building Design reports. The plan includes 214 homes, 44,434 m2 of office space and 216 m2 of retail. Opponents call the design by Hopkins Architects bland and say it will ruin a prominent, open patch of land on the Thames River. Planning officers contend the buildings are similar in height to nearby neighbors and that the two tallest elements of the headquarters building will be separated by a glazed atrium, meaning the building "does not appear as one, large imposing block." ARCHI-TREAD OBTAINS U.S. PATENT Following growth that entailed relocating its Northeast U.S. manufacturing operations and expanding into Canada, Archi-Tread®, manufacturer of Sillskin® elevator-sill systems, was recently awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office for its sill systems. Archi-Tread expects its patent application in Canada to be approved “very soon.” Image courtesy architectsjournal.co.uk: https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/hopkins-controversial-plans-for-itv-hq-approved/10027933.article Subscribe to the Podcast: iTunes?Google Play | SoundCloud?Stitcher?TuneIn
