Today's podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com ALIMAK BMUs FOR CHINESE CITY’S TALLEST BUILDING Qingdao CONSON Development Group has selected Alimak Group's CoxGomyl building maintenance units (BMUs) for the Haitian Center, three towers in Qingdao, China, housing hotels, a commercial center, a museum and apartments. At 369 m, or roughly 111 stories, one of the towers will be the tallest in the city. The order covers design, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning of seven sets of BMUs valued at approximately US$5.8 million. Other vertical-transportation companies involved in the Haitian Center include Lerch Bates Inc., which designed the vertical and horizontal transportation system. Completion is anticipated in 2019. FIRST-OF-THEIR-KIND ESCALATORS ON NEW CRUISE SHIP Twenty-eight large elevators and eight sets of public-area escalators — the first such escalators on a cruise ship — are among amenities on Dream Cruises' new Global-class ship, for which a ceremonial steel cutting was held in March at MV Werften shipyards in Wismar and Rostock, Germany, by Genting Hong Kong, Passenger Ship Technology reports. Genting Cruise Lines ultimately plans four ships, each 342 m long, 46.4 m wide and with drafts of 9.5 m. Genting Group CEO Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said the ships are not only the largest cruise ships to be built in Germany, but also among the most technologically advanced, with features such as facial and voice recognition and automated robots to perform routine tasks. They are being designed "specifically for the rapidly growing Asian cruise market." NAEC ADDS STAFF MEMBER Darrah Johnson joined the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) staff in February as certification board and office assistant. Johnson’s responsibilities will be serving as staff liaison to the certification board and managing tasks for NAEC’s American National Standards Institute accreditation, as well as handling the education-board ballots. She will also be responsible for daily administrative duties. She has experience in accreditation and certification, project and conflict management, handling of contractual and legal documents, and daily administrative duties. “Please join us in welcoming Darrah to the NAEC family,” NAEC Executive Director Teresa Witham said. PRIVATE ELEVATOR ENTRIES HELP DISTINGUISH MIAMI CONDO TOWER Private elevator entry into each condominium and expansive glass terraces that take full advantage of views are among features aimed at attracting buyers to the 47-story Una tower planned at 175 SE 25th Road on the Brickell waterfront in Miami, Curbed Miami reports. The developers are OKO Group and Vlad Doronin, in partnership with real-estate investment firm Cain International. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture designed Una, which will have 135 units starting at approximately US$900,000. Residents will enjoy views of Key Biscayne, downtown Miami, Miami Beach, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. WORLD’S LARGEST MODULAR HOTEL DEBUTS IN MANHATTAN A grand opening was recently held for what is being described by construction firm Rinaldi Group as the world's largest modular hotel, CitizenM at 189 Bowery in Manhattan. Following success in Asia and Europe, modular construction is one of the fastest-growing trends in real estate, according to Rinaldi, as it saves time and money and limits street closures — a positive for cities like New York. Curbed New York previously reported on the "curious concrete finger" poking up near the intersection of Bowery and Delancey that was actually CitizenM's elevator shaft. Standing 20 stories, CitizenM has approximately 300 rooms and was constructed using modular units manufactured in Poland.
