Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com NEW ELEVATOR SYSTEM FOR STATE CAPITOL BUILDING IN BISMARCK The 21-story, Great Depression-era North Dakota state capital building in Bismarck is getting a new, four-elevator system to replace an old one that includes motors that are original to the building, the Bismarck Tribune reports. Otis is performing the US$1.8-million job, which includes cables, cars and machinery. Facility Management Director John Boyle says the smart, energy-efficient system will “pay for itself in operational and energy savings.” A destination-dispatch system is expected to result in a 51% decrease in total travel time. TODDLER BREAKS LEG IN ESCALATOR MISHAP IN INDONESIA A three-year-old girl was hospitalized with a broken leg after getting her foot stuck in an escalator at mall in Bengkulu, Indonesia, on April 21, The Jakarta Post reports. The child and her mother were traveling on the down escalator hand in hand when the incident occurred. A shopkeeper turned off the device, and security guards freed the child’s foot. ESCALATOR ATTENDANT COMING TO INDIAN RAIL STATION Officials at Trichy Rail Station in southern India are in the process of hiring an attendant for its escalator that was inaugurated in 2016, The Times of India reports. The move is in response to the Train Travelers Association’s concern that some passengers, such as the elderly, women and children, have trouble navigating the conveyance and lose their balance. The source notes that at least one elderly person per day is treated at a local emergency center for injuries sustained on the escalator. NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR INAUGURAL ELLIES AWARDS The Ellies is a new awards program by ELEVATOR WORLD that recognizes North American elevator and escalator industry businesses that go above and beyond. Anyone can nominate a business, basing nominations on such aspects as quality, customer service, charity/association/committee/educational participation, safety education and awareness, and a positive work environment. Winners in each of the six categories will be announced in the December 2018 issue of EW and receive an official Ellies statuette, and a custom "Winner" logo to use for print and on websites/emails. The contest is open to North American companies (those in the U.S., Canada and Mexico). The Deadline for nominations is May 31, and finalists in each category will be announced on June 15. MIXED-USED TOWER PROPOSED NEAR CENTRAL PARK IN NYC New York YIMBY reports that developer Solow Management Corp. has filed permits for a 52-story, 672-ft.-tall mixed-use skyscraper at 12 West 57th Street, just south of Central Park in New York City (NYC). The building would include 383,000 sq. ft. of floor space, of which 202,738 sq. ft. would go to 80 residential units. The remainder would be for commercial use, though the filing was not specific about that part of the plan. The source speculated, however, that it might include a hotel with dining, or back-of-house or ground-floor retail. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was listed as the building's designer.
