IN MEMORIAM: MARK L. LANE Mark L. Lane, founder of Elevator Motors Corp. (EMC) and a longtime elevator man credited with bringing new technology to the industry, passed away peacefully at his home in Plainview, New York, on February 24 at age 94. A World War II veteran, Lane got his start in the elevator business with motor manufacturer Electro Dynamics in the 1950s in New York City, leaving in 1960 to start EMC, which is still in business today. He was involved in industry organizations including NAESA International and the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) throughout his life, holding numerous positions and, in 1993, receiving the NAEC President’s Award. Lane traveled the world in search of new elevator technology to bring to the U.S. and was an avid pilot who would regularly fly to visit suppliers and customers. Survivors include son, Robert; daughters-in-law Donna and Barbara; and grandson, Gavin. KONE TO PROVIDE ELEVATORS FOR TORONTO LRT EXPANSION KONE will provide 51 MonoSpace® 700 elevators to 16 stations that are part of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) expansion project in Toronto. Construction of a total of 25 stations is expected to begin in June, with the stations opening by 2022. The project is owned and designed by Metrolinx and operated by the Toronto Transit Commission. The architect is Crosslinx Transit Solutions Design, a joint venture of SNC-Lavalin Inc. and IBI Group, and the general contractor is Crosslinx Transit Solutions Constructors, a partnership of SNC-Lavalin Constructors (Pacific) Inc., Dragados Canada Inc., EllisDon Civil Ltd. and Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc. ONE MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT BECOMES TWO IN CHICAGO Riverline, a US$2-billion, multiple-tower residential development on 13 acres on the Chicago riverfront is now two separate projects — one called Riverline by Chicago's CMK Cos. and the other yet to be named by Australia's Lendlease, the Chicago Tribune reports. The developers, which had previously joined forces, will continue to use a Perkins + Will master plan, but make their own property mix, financing and construction timeline decisions. CMK takes over the 8-acre parcel south of the Bertrand Goldberg-designed Marina City complex, and Lendlease, the 7-acre portion north of River City Condominiums. The first of five buildings planned by Lendlease, a 29-story apartment tower on South Wells Street, is looking at a summer completion. CMK plans to start construction on a 19-story apartment tower, the first of three, in 2019. ONE OF WORLD’S TALLEST STUDENT TOWERS FOR MELBOURNE Geneva, Switzerland-based private-equity firm Pamoja Capital has purchased a piece of property in Melbourne on which it plans to build one of the world's tallest student-housing towers, The Urban Developer reports. Previous owner Greenfort Capital will remain involved in development management at the "prime" site overlooking Queen Victoria Market at 478-488 Elizabeth Street. Envisioned is a 52-story building with approximately 860 student beds, as well as co-working space. Greenfort said it is encouraged by the strength of Melbourne's education market and looks forward to working with Pamoja. FOSTER + PARTNERS DESIGN FOR DUBAI TOWER The Foster + Partners design of an approximately 30-story structure by Dubai-based developer Omniyat on the Dubai Canal that will house a hotel and luxury residences was unveiled during a gala event earlier this month, ConstructionWeekOnline.com reports. The building, resembling a deconstructed crystal palace with two towers that interconnect at outdoor terraces on various levels, will be managed by the Dorchester Collection and named Private Residences. Situated in the Marasi Business Bay area of the canal, the development will be among the first to be managed by London-based Dorchester in the region.
