This week’s news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: http://www.elevatorbooks.com THYSSENKRUPP MAINTAINING STOCKHOLM METRO thyssenkrupp set up a new branch to oversee maintenance of the approximately 220 escalators and 220 elevators in 80 stations on the 110-km-long Stockholms tunnelbana, the Swedish capital's metro system famous for its elaborate art installations. The contract launched in summer and will continue for eight years. Signed with Stockholm's public-transportation company Storstockhoms Lokaltrafik, the contract is one of the biggest of its kind in Sweden. Up to 270 million people use the system each year (more than half a million people per day). CECA ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS The Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) has announced CAD2,500 (US$1,924) scholarships each to four incoming/existing college students. The “Elevator Studies” winners are Antony Zachata (son of Vlad Zachata of Richmond Elevator) and Thomas Davidson (stepson of Joe Davidson of Elevator One). “General Studies” winners are Charmian Wenger (daughter of Doug Wenger of Delta Elevator) and Chloe Chan (daughter of Raymond Chan of City Elevator). Zachata will begin the Foundations and Millwright program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Burnaby, British Columbia, and Davidson will begin the Elevating Devices course at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario. TRIO OF TOWERS UP TO 29 STORIES PLANNED OUTSIDE MELBOURNE Buzy B Pty. Ltd. proposes to build 16-, 19- and 29-story towers at 837 Whitehorse Road in Box Hill, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, Urban.com/au reports. CHT Architects designed the development, which is now up for public review. Joined by a podium containing approximately 50 hotel suites and 578 m2 of retail, the two tallest towers would have 273 apartments. The 16-story building would provide office space on a “prime corner location.” Six basement levels would house 444 car- and 176 bicycle-parking spots. An array of amenities, including 820 m2 of communal space for residents across various levels, are also planned. Should it be built, the development will be among the tallest in Box Hill. 26-STORY RESIDENTIAL TOWER COMING TO SOUTH LONDON BOROUGH London architecture firm BPTW Partnership has received permission to build Cambridge House, a 26-story tower with 97 new homes by affordable-housing provider Notting Hill Genesis on Wellesley Road, one of the main streets in the south London borough of Croydon, Building Design reports. The structure will be various shades of gray with a white-brick frame that extends past the parapet to form a square crown. BPTW Director Chris Bath said the design respects the “existing modernist vernacular” of central Croydon. Henry Construction is set to deliver the project, to take shape on the site of a four-story building. HONDURAN CAPITAL COMPLEX REACHES HALFWAY POINT Construction on tower one of the 24-story, two-tower Government Civic Center (GCC) in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, has reached the 12th floor, La Tribuna reports. The contractor, known as DOIH, completed tower two, as well as a basement-level parking garage with 2,800 parking spaces. Being done under a public-private partnership, GCC will be designed to house nearly 40 state institutions, and approximately 9,000 public employees will be transferred there upon the buildings’ completion. The 31,000-m2 complex is expected to open after mid 2019.
