Suicide is a leading cause of death in US elementary school–aged children, and the suicide rate in black school-aged children has increased in recent years. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control show a dramatic rise for young children and adolescents since the epidemic started. From March through October, 2020 mental health-related emergency department visits rose 24% for children ages 5 to 11 and 31% among adolescents ages 12 to 17 when compared with the same period in 2019

Disruptive routines, fear of sickness or family loss, economic and housing mobility have proved to be significant stressors for adults as well as children. Social isolation caused by being quarantined and widespread social inequities may prove the heaviest burdens for adolescents and young children who go through an an even more intense period of growth and social learning,

Although little is known about the factors precipitating suicide among young children, Jon Mattleman offers some insight on Embark. Jon's life work as a counselor is to help parents better understand their children, and encourage children and adolescents to make meaningful change, as well as good decisions.
