The Spark
Acts 9:3-6
Synopsis: All through high school I took Agriculture classes. Why, because I wanted to be a farmer, not really. They were fun but I did learn some important things like shop safety. When we were being taught to weld we were required to wear a safety hood with a really dark lens or we were told to look away when the arc was struck. Why, because the light from the spark could damage our eyes. Well of course I had to try it and the result was that I saw that spot on my eye for most of the rest of the day.
I imagine that welding spark was dim compared to the spark of light Saul of Tarsus saw on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-2). Others looked away, but not Saul and as a result, when the light was gone, Saul could not see anything in this world. Now that was surely the Spark of the Lord.
Fortunately, Saul was not the only one to see the Spark of the presence of the Lord. Others did in those days and still others do today. The revelation of the presence of the Lord is particular to the individual. Thomas, one of the Twelve, said he had to put his finger in the wounds in Jesus’ hands and feet and thrust his hand into Jesus’ side. All of that changed when Thomas saw Jesus. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who believe without seeing me (John 20:24-29).
