Evangelism in Acts 17 is the sixteenth episode in our series looking at the evangelistic encounters found in the Book of Acts. Did Paul forget to mention the name of Jesus at speaking at the Areopagus in Acts 17? Was he ashamed of Christ or the scriptures? Did he even share the Gospel with these Polytheists?

These are all challenges our team has heard or read from Christians who take Paul to task for his failures at Mars hill in Acts 17. But are their critiques justified, or is there more going on in this passage that some are missing?

The evangelism in Acts 17 was crucial to the biblical evangelism training the Engage 360 developed. When we developed our training approach for Engage 360, we did not focus on what verses can be used to explain the Gospel. Instead, we looked to the Bible and asked the question, “What did they actually do?” Below is the summary of their approach.

  • G: Gauge your audience
  • O: Offer common ground
  • S: Shift to Christianity and the Gospel
  • P: Provide evidence
  • E: Explain the Gospel
  • L: Leave with a clear next step
