After working closely with Dan Cohen, the founder of Music and Memory, and implementing an iPod music program at several long term care facilities in New Brunswick, the Atlantic Institute on Aging had an opportunity to converse with community members who have implemented a Music and Memory program of their own. Social Work students of St. Thomas University, Alicia Friars and Kristopher Gordan, introduced the Music and Memories Ipod Project in a local nursing care home and senior apartment complex located in Hampton, New Brunswick. Even amongst the rainy weather, the pair travelled the hour and a half trek to the Institute’s office to voice their personal experiences with the Music and Memories Ipod Project.
For the past three months the duo have been researching, gathering required equipment and supplies, conversing with staff, residents and family members, and of course working on the needed paperwork for residents to participate with the Music and Memory project. Just in the past few weeks, the preliminary work has begun to pay off as the pair have witnessed the benefits of a personalized playlist. Kris and Alicia spoke eloquently about the powerful benefits music can produce once a resident slips on a pair of earphones and is exposed to familiar and enjoyable music.
