The god of jazzy bossa nova-inflected “easy listening” wrote banger after banger for artists such as Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Perry Como, Dusty Springfield and, of course, Cilla Black. He also appeared in every instalment of Mike Myer’s comedic film franchise Austin Powers, including Goldmember and The Spy Who Shagged Me.
