The Basic Principles of Protecting Your Business Idea with Dr Ana Penteado

How do I protect my business idea? How can I find investors without giving it away? How can I get people to join me without telling them all about it? What if they steal my idea?

We’ve all had these amazing moments where we get out of the shower or come back from the pub with a mate and realise that you may have an idea that could be the ‘Next big thing’.

Mostly it stays as an idea because we aren’t sure how to take it past that stage, how to protect and how to get investor support while maintaining control.

Today we talk to Dr Ana Penteado, about the basic principles of how you can protect your idea while being able to share it with those that can make a difference by providing time, money and resources.

Dr Penteado, is an international IP professional with experience in Australia, United States and England. Dr. Penteado earned her first Law degree in civil law at Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1994. In 1997, she was awarded her LL.M. at University of California at Berkeley specialized in IP and International Law. In 2004, she was awarded a highly prestigious scholarship for international students and earned her Doctorate in Philosophy of Law at Macquarie University.

Dr. Penteado was one of the many now pioneering IP students to be fortunate enough to become a Professor Merges alumni, one of the best IP scholars in the world, renowned for his books and lectures. Under his mentorship throughout her academic career, Dr. Penteado has been publicly acknowledged for her research on one of his books, “Justifying Intellectual Property” published by the Harvard University Press in 2011. “Professor Merges’s students are very fortunate in a sense that we are trained to think outside of the box, which is a fantastic skill for IP assets protection.” Dr. Penteado says.

A highlight of her professional career was the opportunity to witness first-hand the rise of venture capital and the internet enterprises that followed the 1990s in the Silicon Valley. Upon returning to Sao Paulo, after her Masters, Dr. Penteado went on to advise venture capitalists and their start-ups to become successful companies, while attorney of an active incubator; a notable success was Buscape Inc.
