Eugene begins by explaining how the title of this talk came about. He takes a brown pencil and begins to draw on the OHP the profile of a man’s head. He says he is going to put into the head three kinds of soul. He defines a soul as “a zone of encapsulated Sentient Power.” In the centre of this head he draws two overlapping circles, one for ‘cognition’ and one for ‘evaluation’, and encloses both within a larger circle he labels ‘ratio’. In the overlapping segment of the two circles he writes ‘soul’. “That soul is a product of cognition and evaluation, and is therefore rational.” Inside the back of the head he draws two more overlapping circles. One is for ‘memory’ and the other for ‘motivation’. In the overlapping segment between them appears another soul. This one is entirely mechanical: “because it is based on things that have happened before and the recurrence of the motivations of those things.” i.e. the memories of previous experiences of pleasures and pains. In the front of the head is another soul, resulting from the overlapping of two more circles, one of ‘sensation’ and the other of ‘imagination’. This soul can manipulate data from the 5 senses and from these, produce new types of imagery. This is the power of the imagination. These 3 souls constitute the ‘brown’ man, the man of the earth. All of the stimuli come from outside him, from the 5 senses, so the power of the imagination, of the intellect, of the memory of motivations and behaviours, all come from outside, which means there must be an origin for each of the 3 souls. Whatever comes into our memory comes from universal substance. We may think our memory is private, but really “it is merely a portion of the Universal’s.”
